Quick answer: choose cotton muslin for light, breathable packaging such as soap, tea, jewelry and favors. Choose cotton canvas (210 GSM) when the bag must protect something heavy or valuable, such as shoes, handbags, glass candle jars and tools. Choose mesh when you need to see inside or let things dry, such as produce, bath toys, sports gear and laundry.
Cotton Pouch makes drawstring bags in all four fabrics in Jackson, New Jersey, so this comparison uses our own specifications and prices.

What does GSM mean for a drawstring bag?
GSM means grams per square metre: the weight of the fabric. A higher GSM is a thicker, more opaque and more durable fabric. 110 GSM muslin is light and soft, 145 GSM muslin is noticeably heavier and hides the contents better, and 210 GSM canvas is almost twice as heavy as light muslin. Mesh is not rated in GSM because most of its surface is open.
When to choose muslin
Muslin is a loosely woven cotton, and the open weave lets air and moisture pass through. That is why loose-leaf tea, dried herbs and handmade soap have been packed in muslin for a very long time. It is the lowest-cost cotton option and it gathers into a neat, tight closure, which makes it the most common choice for favors and small retail packaging.
- Pick 110 GSM for the softest, lightest bag and the lowest price on large favor or sample runs.
- Pick 145 GSM when the bag will be seen by customers. It looks more substantial and is less see-through, which is why it is our standard.
When to choose canvas
Canvas is a tight, heavy weave. At 210 GSM it holds its shape, resists snags and protects what is inside from dust and scuffs. Use it for shoe and handbag dust bags, glass candle jars, tools and anything with weight. It costs a little more per bag than muslin but feels like a premium product, so brands often use it as reusable packaging customers keep.
When to choose mesh
Mesh is an open net, so you can see the contents and air moves freely. Cotton mesh is the natural, plastic-free choice for produce, curing soap and herbs. Polyester mesh is white, light and dries quickly, which makes it the practical choice for laundry bags, sports gear and bath toys. Mesh is not right for very small items, which can slip through the holes.
Single or double drawstring?
A single drawstring has one cord that pulls from one side. It is the simplest and lowest-cost closure. A double drawstring has two cords that pull from both sides, so it closes tighter and stays closed when the bag is carried by its cords. Choose double for anything heavy or loose, and for any bag a customer will reuse.
Do cotton drawstring bags shrink?
Yes, a little. Natural, undyed cotton shrinks about 3–5% on the first wash. If the finished size matters after washing, order one size up. Wash cold and tumble dry low or line dry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between muslin and canvas drawstring bags?
Muslin is a light, loosely woven cotton (110–145 GSM) that breathes and gathers tightly. Canvas is a heavy, tightly woven cotton (210 GSM) that is opaque, firm and more protective. Muslin suits light packaging; canvas suits shoes, handbags and heavy items.
Is 145 GSM muslin better than 110 GSM?
145 GSM muslin is heavier and less see-through than 110 GSM, so it looks more premium in retail packaging. 110 GSM is softer and lighter and suits favors and samples. Both cost the same per bag at Cotton Pouch in most sizes.
Which drawstring bag fabric is best for produce?
Cotton mesh is best for produce because air moves through the open weave and you can see what is inside. Muslin also works for produce that needs to stay covered, such as bread or leafy greens.
Are mesh drawstring bags good for laundry?
Yes. Mesh lets damp laundry breathe and dries quickly. Polyester mesh is the most practical for laundry; cotton mesh is the plastic-free option.
Which fabric is best for shoe dust bags?
210 GSM cotton canvas is best for shoe and handbag dust bags because it is opaque, firm and protects against dust and scuffs. A 12×16 inch bag fits a pair of adult shoes.
